Missing In Mississippi – Daniel Murry Dutton

For the second installment of our Missing In Mississippi series, we are going to talk about the case of Daniel Murry Dutton. You can find his NamUs profile here. He is also listed with the Charley Project, here.

Daniel was a 28 year old male from Long Beach, Mississippi when he was reported missing in the summer of 2000. At the time of his disappearance, he was working as a taxi driver for Yellow Cab in Biloxi, Mississippi and lived with his parents in Long Beach.

Daniel was last seen in Long Beach on July 8, 2000 around 11:00 p.m. by his father at his Long Beach home. The following morning, his parents found a note that Daniel had left saying that he had to go away for a few days. He hasn’t been heard from again and his father reported him missing on July 17, 2000.

Five days after his father last saw him, Daniel’s taxi was found in the parking lot of a Days Inn hotel in Lake City, Florida. This was on July 13, 2000. Daniel’s checkbook, glasses, and some receipts were inside the vehicle. There was also half a roll of duct tape and a bent golf club in the trunk. There were no visible traces of blood and Daniel had not registered as a guest in the hotel. When the hotel staff found the car, they called the cab company instead of the police. The cab company then called the Dutton home to check on Daniel then made arrangements to have the cab towed back to Biloxi. Some of the receipts in the car indicated that it had traveled to Gainesville, Florida which is just about an hour from Lake City.

When the police went to Gainesville and started asking around, they learned that Daniel might have possibly stayed at an Econolodge there on July 9, 2000 and paid in cash. They also found receipts for a backpack, toothbrush, and toothpaste. Daniel’s checking account had been overdrawn for two weeks prior to his disappearance and he had maxed out his credit cars. Daniel hasn’t accessed his financial accounts or emailed anyone since his disappearance and he did not have a cell phone. His case is still open and the police check for activity on his social security number periodically, there has not been any.

In the years since Daniel’s disappearance, both of his parents have passed away without knowing where their son is. Almost 16 years after his disappearance, his case remains unsolved.

Daniel is described as 5’9″, 195 pound Asian/Caucasian male with black hair and brown eyes. At the time of his disappearance, Daniel wore his hair long and had a beard. He has very poor eye sight and wears glasses. He also has a tattoo of a penguin on his shoulder. He might go by the name of Dan.

At this point, 16 years later, the police fear that Daniel is no longer alive. However, if you have any information that might help this family have some closure please contact the Long Beach Police Department at (228) 863-7292.
